According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), clinical trials or research studies are a way for the medical community to develop a new medication or treatment for a disease or condition.
Even though participation has its risks, there are also many benefits to being a part of a clinical trial. As a research volunteer, you will have access to new drugs and treatments not yet available to the general public. This also provides an opportunity to help others with the same disease or condition now and in the future by providing data and experience on how different treatments work.
We are currently looking for anyone of adult age to participate in our clinical trials. This means anyone 18 years or older. Different studies may have different requirements. An example would be some studies require healthy individuals without any medical problems whereas some others require people with a certain disease or condition (e.g. osteoarthritis of the knee).
Involvement and participation requirements depend on the study. Some studies require answering questions on your own time, whereas others require regular visits after receiving a drug or treatment. Still others, may involve surgical techniques and implants that are currently experimental but yet beneficial. There are also many studies with requirements in-between these. Our research staff will talk to you about all of the procedures involved to be a successful part of the clinical trial before you participate.
We take your participation with the highest regard and gratitude. As such, we will do everything we can to protect you as a participant and decrease your risk. There are many regulations in place that help decrease risks, such as requiring us to deidentify any personal data to protect your privacy. This means that we have patient data associated with a number rather than a name or date of birth (e.g. "patient 001 vs John Smith") which will then be protected with certain securities in place. We also believe that the consent process should be truly informed and will gladly sit with you to explain all risks and benefits for participation, including any study procedures thereafter. We are here with you every step of the way to ensure you have a great experience with our practice.
